Middletown Five Loses 38 To 17 At WestHartf ord Winners Regain Form and Run Riot Gray Leacis scorers West Hartford High's chalked court representatives suddenly took on a new lease of life last night in the William Hall High School gym and completely ran riot against Middletown High's basketeers for a 38 to 17 victory. It was the winners first win in th Centra Connecticut Interscholastic Basketball League this season. Led by Gray, stellar Blue and White forward, West Hartford High started off in a manner which surprised even their most ardent followers, and left the floor at the end of the first half with a 23 to 9 lead.

Getting the ball from the" tap off Gray sunk several two pointers before Middletown had a chance to get their defense functioning, only to be followed by Havens, another teammate, who proceeded to lead the Middletown backs a merry chase. A trio of field goals and as many foul goals was all the losers could garner in the opening periods. The winners continued where they left off in the Initial half, with Carey, who had replaced Havens, as trie big sharpshooter, and Gray running him a close second for scoring honors in these periods? Rallying from the verge of a knockout that would have repeated bis previous disaster, Joe Dundee, nigged Baltimore welterweight, came back to pound out a victory over Eddie Robert, the "Ta-coma Terror," In a slashing 10-round battle at Madison Square Garden tonight.

Dundee earned the unanimous verdict or the Judges and referee. He was credited with eight of the ten rounds of furious fighting but It was only by the margin of two seconds that he escaped a sudden finish In the fourth round. Knocked down by ft jiashlng "one-two" to the Jaw in this round, Dundee was pounded all over the ring but kept his feet by a remarkable display of boxing and generalship. Roberts' Arm Weary. Roberts, arm weary and near the point of exhaustion from his desperate efforts to whip over the knockout blow, was decisively beaten from then on to the finish.

The Marathon is scheduled to start at 11 a. m. 'at th. isthmus on the northeastern edge of this island, with the California mainland, nearly twenty-two miles away the goal. Records show that more than a score of attempts since 1923 have failed because of chilling waters, fogs and powerful currents.

The icy waters proved the greatest All Near Starting Line. Most of the 153 entrants and officials left the mainland late today to spend the night here. Of the swimmers who will try for the cash prls offered by William Wrlgley. chewing gum magnate, the twenty women seek the 15,000 prize for the first woman to swim the channel. The first man will receive $25,000.

If a woman is the only contestant to finish she will receive the $25,000. Only one of the attempts last year to swim the channel was successful, according to official records. This crossing was accomplished by a relay team of fifteen in September but only after haroic exertions. Starting from Long Beach, on the mainland, the swimmers battled for S3 hours and 20 minutes against the cold waters and currents before this isle was reaehed. Several Good Showings.

Outstanding attempt are: Art Bramfield, In 1923, gave up after swimming for 8 hours and 20 minutes. Louis Hennessey, giant Newfound-" lander; signalled exhaustion from battling the lef currents when within five miles of the goal oa September 25, 1923. On October 19 last, Gene Jordon of Nacogdoches, without grease or clothing of any kind, came within four miles of swimming the passage. Jack Walyneic, Venice, distance swimmer, gave up the attempt when he was within a mile and a half of the mainland. He attempted the swim October 29 last year.

Walter G. Taber, an oil worker of Huntington Beach, startled swimming circles on November 19 by declaring he had paddled his way across the channel, landing at Huntington Beach. Swimming experts, th the absence of sufficient confirmation, later grew skeptical, many refusing to believe that the feat was accomplished. Jordon, Hennessey and Taber are entered In the marathon tomorrow. Storm Warnings Set.

Storm warnings were flying alojg the mainland tonight. While swarms of swimmers Jammed the pavilion hers to receive the last word from official. spaces were being marked off in sand at the Isthmus, on the nor eastern edge of the island, where th-: start will be made. Each swimmer must report at the beach space whoiie number corrc-oonrl i to the one he will wear in the race. Observers, one for each swimmer, v.i'.i be named by race officials before tlr? start and, with signal flags and flar-s.

will accompany the contestant in rowboat or power boat. A pistol shot will start the long line of paddlers on their way. In case a swimmer Is disqualified the observer, who will act as an umpire, or he decides to quit the race, convoying boat will signal accompanying tugs who will respond. Flags will be used by day and flares by night. Observers will be changed frequently so that no official accompanies the same swimmer throughout the long race.

Judges stationed on the shore will be dispatched by speedboat or automobile to any point where a swimmer is reported nearing the finish. The natators completed their training on the island beaches tonlgbt. Among them are many promlnrnt swimmers, including Henry F. Sullivan, of Lowell, who conquered the English Channel; Norman Ross of San Francisco, speedy giant; Young of Toronto, 17, who is rated as the fastest swimmer amop? the entries, and many others witlsy known. Clara Belle Barrett, husky New York school teacher, had a place in the betting on the women entrants.

Critics gave her th best chances among the twenty of her sex who have signed to start, with some wagering her against the men. The actual number who will start tn the swim will not be known until the water count is made after the p'stol shot, officials of the race said. Sullivan's Basket Tossing Defeats Danielson Team Stafford Springs, Jan. 14. (Special Stafford Big Five defeated Danielson Big Five tonight in Hall Memorial; gymnasium at South Wllllngton 36 to-32.

(Special.) Yale's swimming team won first In every event except one tonight, defeating the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 54 to 8. The only visitor to finish better than third wa3 Grover, who led Stuart Scott, the Yale football player, in the 100-yard swim until the last 100 feet when Scott spurted and won by a stroke. Captain Tibby Bunnell of the Yale swimming and football teams went to defeat for the first time this season by a teammate, when Johnny Pojg finished 6ix inches ahead of him in the 50-yard race. Walsh's victory over Vaden in the fancy dive displayed a newcomer on the Yale team In excellent all round form. Vaden did the most brilliant and the most erratic diving of the evening.

Billy Sanford. In winning the 440-yard distance event, lapped Mayers, his teammate, and led Payson and Weis. the technology swlmsiers. by two laps in the near record time of 5 minutes, 19 4-5 seconds. The Yale relay team led throughout the 200 yards event.

The visitors started off with a rush and It was 8 to 2 In their favor when the first period ended. About fifteen seconds of the second quarter had been played when the lights in the building suddenly went out. Some of the globes came back to working order but others remained quite obdu-rant. Finally every light was burning again, and Bristol went right back to work. When the halfway stage was reached It was Bristol 21.

East Hartford live Not only was the Bell City team ring Ing up scores with great, consistency. but its well conceived and well execut- ed zone defense had the East Hart- ford scoring efforts well bottled up. i The size of the floor, which Is one i of the smallest In the state, might have been expected to put a check on the Bristol team, but if there was a slowing down on the part of the visitors, it certainly was not easy to discern. Splendid spirit. The spirit with which the East Hartford players worked was good enough to earn the cheers of Die team's supporters.

Though obviously outclassed by an exceptionally good schoolboy team, East Hartford never faltered In its efforts to hold the score down. Bristol not only had the advantage In playing class, but It had a big edge In height, reach and weight Important factors In any basketball game. Bristol made the best use of these qualifications without once resorting of courie. but they were the kind that could hadly be nvoided on auen a small court. Ilugret Played Well.

Sammy Baker Wilkes-Barre, Jan. 14. (AP.) Pete Latzo, of Scranton, welter- weight champion received the de-1 clsion over Sergeant Sammy Baker, of Mitchell Field, in ten rounds at the Armory tonight. Appearing before his coal region neighbors for the first time since he won the title from liickey Walker last May, Latzo up' a great battle, and received the u-1 nanlmous decision of both judges and the referee.
